This week’s Nusic Future Session is with THE AFTERDARK MOVEMENT, a hip hop/funk band so incredible they even get AC/DC fans rocking out to them at acoustic shows!
We’re the first to rant when we’re not happy with the levels of support from our established local media outlets, so we try and karmically balance things out by acknowledging any positive, forward thinking innovations. Credit where it’s due, metaphorical hats off, we’re loving this new move by BBC Radio Nottingham – local artists on their daytime playlist!
Evolving since April a ‘dedicated local slot has been added to the playlist‘, should you have been listening recently yourself this explains why you have heard the likes of JAKE BUGG and NINA SMITH on daytime radio. And it’s not just for one week, local artists securing this slot get a FORNIGHT on the BBC Radio Nottingham playlist.
The BBC’s Dean Jackson (who picks the track) commented further, “this isn’t a ‘lip service’ exercise. The local act goes onto maximum rotation on the playlist; the same as Take That and Cee-Lo Green“. Get to the back Barlow, the Notts Crew are in town!
We passionately believe in the importance of media exposure in the early fledging days of a musical career, media exposure oxygenates your talent and so this is a great step forward, but not just on the exposure vibe. Combined with the regional reach across the East Midlands of The Beat (the BBC Introducing Show for Nottingham) this represents a great chance for local musicians to generate some decent cash from PRS (fees for being played on the radio).
Register for PRS HERE:
All in all sending your music into the BBC Introducing Uploader now offers you the chance to get daytime exposure on BBC Nottingham, regional exposure via The Beat and to earn money for being played on the radio, what exactly are you waiting for?! Spread the word…

TRANSPARANCY NOTE: Dog Is Dead are now managed by the DHP Group who also half run (with Nottingham City Council) our sponsor’s Splendour.
We’ve eaten so much ice cream and burgers, slapped on the factor 50 numerous times, but sadly it’s now nearing the end of the day. It’s been a great day for Notts music and if you’ve missed some of their gigs ’cause you were queuing for the loos, no fear! Here’s a look back at some of the amaaazing Notts acts we’ve seen today…
Kicking off the Jagermeister stage was HARLEIGHBLU. Her stunning soulful voice perfectly accompanies the funky blues-y style of her band, and the audience (and the deer) were treated to a new original song of theirs called Casanova at the start of their set. Upbeat, classy and catchy perfectly describes their performance. It’s a great combo for the sun and grass vibes at Wollaton Park.

Future Sound of Nottingham winners THE MONEY gathered quite a crowd for their set to open the main stage. Rightly deserved, as big things are predicted for the band who won their place at the Splendour lineup. The four-piece started with Looks Like Rain and confidently launched into the rest of their impressive repertoire of songs, including a brand new melodious tune never played to a crowd before. Catchy riffs and gorgeous harmonies marks these guys out as special and definitely one to watch. They did us proud!

Provocative and eccentric, frontwoman Lou Barnell led ROYAL GALA through an energetic performance at the Jagermeister stage. Latin and reggae-infused tunes with accents of heavy brass are their trademark as well as a sensational degree of showmanship from Lou. This gig is no different. The ten-piece band played a couple of new tracks which had a good part of the crowd up and skanking (yes skanking) in no time. Skanking on a Sunday afternoon in Wollaton Park? Now I’ve seen it all.

GALLERY 47 aka Jack Peachey has had the crowd mesmerised today at the LeftLion stage in the courtyard. His soulful voice had passers-by stopping to watch and the crowd were clearly enthralled. He also showed off his song writing skills in a clever song about his cat. That’s a must listen. As a talented young guitarist, he’s def one of our favourite solo male artists in Notts.

SWIMMING are one of Nottingham’s most unique bands, mixing together rock and uplifting synth to form a sound different to anything you might have heard before. The vocals from lead singer John Sampson have slight undertones of The Smiths and live, they are awesome. Today they played a brilliantly put together set which was highly entertaining and very refreshing to the ears.

Since DOG IS DEAD‘s first appearance at Splendour in 2008, huge things have happened. They’re now signed and have gotten bigger and most definitely better. A lot of the crowd were singing along to their songs, one of which was the anthem Young, which is a testament to their well deserved popularity. Their performance was quality, and the guys also revealed they’re headlining Rock City in December. Wahey!

Swimming’s own drummer has his own side project as himself called THE PETEBOX, which is very successful in its own right. And no wonder as he’s literally a one man band who can beatbox, MC, sing and play guitar all at the same. He was impressive to watch today at the LeftLion stage. His set was a mixture of his own songs, a Nirvana cover, and he even threw in a drum and bass track. For a guy to do all that layering and recording in one go, live, takes skill, and it’s clear The Petebox has that in bucketloads.

What a great day for the Nottingham Music Scene : 0 )

We’ve got a bit of a mix for you this week Comrades!
On Wednesday at The Maze we’ve got a big, local metal gig.
Firstly we have SYSTEMATIC KILLING MACHINE. Expect plenty of
headbanging and windmilling when these guys take to the stage. Despite
the name, these chaps seem very playful and you’ll definitely be in
for some entertainment.
Keeping the happy vibes going will be DIRTY BEARD who have found a
joyful medium between metal and blues. They mix catchy riffs with slow
rock beats. Don’t miss these!
WAY OF THE ATOM are up next. These guys would be star pupils in an
‘How to Make a Great Rock Crescendo’ class. They tease you in with
pretty riffs then suddenly attack you with waves of crafted noise. I’m
looking forward to these.
A band from Stoke DEVIL DOWN will be on next, but we don’t like Stoke
as much as we like Nottingham so we’ll move on.
On next are INTO RUINS and they are LOUD. There will certainly be some
mosh pits started up in the Maze when these guys start to play. You
can’t help but move to their ridiculously fast songs.
The final act to shake up the Maze are IMPERIAL CIRCUS. They sound
like a heavier version of a Dave Grohl-fronted Red Hot Chili Peppers.
There will be air guitars and power stances all round when they start
to play their alternative take to metal.
Doors: 7pm
Tickets: £3
Next on Thursday (28th) we have Acoustickle at Alley Café.
As always this promises to be a night of chill time, in a bubbly
atmosphere with some really talented, acoustic Notts artists.
BEN WAGNER from BREADCHASERS, a great Notts ska band, will be playing
with perhaps even a beatboxer to mix things up. Don’t miss this
versatile man.
Keeping the entertainment fresh, THE MAFFA KINGS, who are known to be
an alternative, psychedelic rock band will be turning the tempo down
on their tunes to keep the theme acoustic.
CRS’s very own LEE GOUGH has got one hell of a voice on him, make sure
you grab his set and be prepared to be blown away.
And ROSANNA O’BRIEN may be young and relatively new to the Notts music
scene, but she’s not shy. Having played her very first gig at the
Valentine’s Acoustickle with a huge crowd to see her play, it’s nice
to see her back and raring to go.
Doors: 7.30pm
Tickets: FREE!
And finally, again on Thursday (28th) Farmyard Records brings you
Acoustic Sessions at The Golden Fleece.
GALLERY 47 will be playing this one, and he’s really not someone you
can justify missing if you haven’t seen him play live before (or even
if you have). Having played T In The Park and Splendour this summer
and with great reception, he’s back in town ready to bring you some
gorgeous acoustic. How he sings so elegantly and plucks his guitar so
quickly at the same time baffles me.

Tickets: FREE!
