{"id":18778,"date":"2018-10-29T10:46:42","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T10:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=18778"},"modified":"2019-09-05T18:34:43","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T17:34:43","slug":"hockley-hustle-2018-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/hockley-hustle-2018-review\/","title":{"rendered":"HOCKLEY HUSTLE 2018 &#8211; Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahh Hustle, you\u2019re a bloody special one, aren\u2019t you? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You make us so happy, tired, and so damn overwhelmed &#8211; you\u2019re basically a really good orgasm in musical form and we are so grateful for that orgasm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okayyyy then why was it so dreamy &#8211; well, it\u2019s basically every musician in Notts &#8211; playing basically every room that has a roof (some without, actually) in Hockley, and its all for charity. Soooo, yeah that&#8217;s why bish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18780\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We started our journey at Rough Trade to see <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>MOLLIE RALPH<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with band. Mollie is a sick performer on her own with that belter of a voice, but her new band just adds another level that takes ya from \u2018this is sick\u2019 to \u2018holy shit this is super sick\u2019&#8230; ya know what I mean. Captivating. In the best way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We then stumble across the \u2018secret set\u2019 from <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>UNKNOWN ERA<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Revolution. Yep, Revolution. Weird as shit. But bloody wonderful. Unknown are just what ya need to get into the Hustle spirit with their blissfully mad antics, and crazy catchy tunes. Skanking to \u2018Read Between the Lines\u2019 whilst passerby\u2019s look on confused &#8211; priceless. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We then ran off to Brewdog to see <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>A-TOTA-SO<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the instrumental three-piece that are a bit intense, a bit enticing, and very pedal-y. And those -y\u2019s all go together to make a proper engaging live performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off to The Angel now to try and see <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>BUS STOP MADONNAS<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but\u2026 err, they look a bit different. Very different. And then we realise there\u2019s been a schedule change and its actually <a href=\"\"><strong>DISTANT BLUE<\/strong><\/a> on now. Not quite sure how we worked that out &#8211; cos it was so rammed it was like bloody Bieber was in the building, but from the middle of the tall-people mosh, their Pop-Punk went down a madness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off to The Bodega this time\u2026 for <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>JIMI MACK<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 right? No. LINEUP CHANGE ALERT. But, errr, the guy who was on stage actually looked a bit like a younger Jimi (psst, that\u2019s a compliment). We confess we didn\u2019t catch his name (let us know homie), but he sang some beaut soft Folk songs with a delicate twang and it calmed our racing minds for a minute and for that reason we\u2019ll always love you Mr Not Jimi Mack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>STOP PRESS: 18:00 29\/10 &#8211; We have found our guy! It was <strong>JOSHUA TURNER<\/strong>. Shouts Josh!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18781\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahhh &#8211; you know what is one thing you can ALWAYS guarantee. No matter if you\u2019re having the best day of your life, or a really really wank day, <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>ROB GREEN<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will always make you feel better. His energy. His charisma. His TUNES. The boy is like a happiness shot in a very talented tall package, and the Broadway senses that I reckon, considering from the second he\u2019s on stage they\u2019re going mental and shouting lovely things. He shared a few songs off the forthcoming debut album (ooooh!) and they sound ace. GIVE US THAT ALBUM ROB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s Das Kino time &#8211; yup, one of the Hustle\u2019s best qualities, Notts muso\u2019s in random places. This time a pizza and ping pong bar. We\u2019re here to see <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>LIA WHITE<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who serenades the room with her incredibly soulful vocal, and\u2026 dem songsss. She got choruses for days man! We then stick around for a few songs of the belter that is <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>CHAI LARDEN<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (What. A. Voice.) And then we are off to\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nottingham Contemporary. Kicking things off we have <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>REMY<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the singer-songwriter that&#8230;. Ugh, did someone make him in a lab? Funny, charismatic, a silky smooth voice. And like five songs that we can\u2019t stop singing. Stop being so good Remy &#8211; it\u2019s not fair on the rest of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18782\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We then eat some food&#8230; and we\u2019re actually straight back to Contempreh to see <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>MY PET FAUXES<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A band we\u2019ve been excited to see for ages. On record, they\u2019ve got these mega catchy 1975-esque Pop bangers\u2026 and good news gang &#8211; they are just as awesome live. Songs that make ya wanna dance even though you know that\u2019s a bad idea. And frontman Aaron (despite some sound problems) is a ready-made rockstar. Swag. Personality. Oh, and the voice &#8211; ya know that\u2019s quite a key bit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to Hock-a-lock-ley for a bit of a dance in the Samba parade (which will haunt my nightmares for a good few nights), and then into the new venue Metronome &#8211; for the return of the <\/span><b>UFO ORCHESTRA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A 60 piece orchestra. With Notts musicians. YEAH BOY. Rammed out, queues round the corner, and for good reason. It\u2019s an incredible experience. Notts musicians take up vocal duties, including some v special moments with <\/span><b><a href=\"\">ROB GREEN<\/a>, <a href=\"\">NATALIE DUNCAN <\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><a href=\"\"><b> NINA SMITH<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wowzers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We then go and have our hearts melted off by <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>LAURIE ILLINGWORTH<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at The Bodega, as does the rammed out room &#8211; peeps have clearly caught on that he\u2019s basically a musical dream, BUT WHILST YOU\u2019RE AWAKE. And then we leg it to Hockley Arts Club to see the live return of <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>ESTHER VAN LEUVEN<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With some incredibly talented musicians behind her &#8211; she delivers some big, but delicate atmospheric tunes. With the voice that is undeniably special.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-18783\" src=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RANDOM VENUE TIME &#8211; Red Dog Saloon &#8211; yeah the burger place &#8211; to see <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>LISA HENDRICKS AND THE PROJECT-US BAND<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yeah, weird. BUT WONDERFUL. Happy, joyful vibes. Catchy tunes. And a smile that makes all your problems go away. Beautiful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our minds are then blown as we head to The Bodega upstairs &#8211; to see <\/span><b><a href=\"\">PETEBOX<\/a> v <a href=\"\">MR SWITCH<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both incredible artists in their field. And together, you\u2019ve basically got a musical theatre show which mixes Eminem, 70s soul, techno and more. And all you\u2019ll hear is \u2018this is mental!\u2019 or \u2018how does he do that with his mouth\u2019, often followed by \u2018that\u2019s what she said\u2019. If you ever get the chance &#8211; get involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We then said we were going home &#8211; but got distracted by <\/span><a href=\"\"><b>JONNY OLLEY<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and his band bringing the bluesy guitar madness at Jam Cafe. Husky brilliance. We had a dance. Had a bop. And then it was time to write this review, edit 1000 photos, and 60gb of footage. With a McDonalds on hand, obvs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hustle &#8211; you don\u2019t need me to tell you this &#8211; but I\u2019m going to anyway. You\u2019re a \u00a0real special being. A lovely, huggable, warm-hearted being. We love you. Notts loves you. Love. Love.
