We had a chat with Jugz himself to find out more about how this album came to be and spoke all about the best thing on Earth. Notts, obvs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You and Parky collaborated back in 2017 for EP \u20186 Bricks\u2019, how long has \u201812 bricks\u2019 been in the works?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We did <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 bricks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> quite quickly, over a couple of weeks, then we put that out. Everything on 12 bricks was actually recorded between 2016 and 2018, so it&#8217;s actually been stashed for a little while. It just seemed like the right time at the moment because we have both been doing a lot of stuff, to keep the momentum going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s the story behind the album?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Parky<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sending beats over originally when we did 6 bricks and we got on together as people. He has been in the UK hip hop scene for a long time, he has produced a lot of people and he rap\u2019s himself. But with me he was like \u2018\u2018oh my god you\u2019re my new favourite rapper\u2019\u2019 and it went from there. We gelled, became friends and it just worked. He kept sending me stuff and was like we might as well do an album, so we went 6-12 and it just came together naturally. I was quite picky. He sent me a lot of beats and I wanted to wait for the right ones that really worked for me. If it doesn\u2019t spark me off within the first few second\u2019s I\u2019m not gonna force it. But with this we just made it work and the way it came together was great.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>What\u2019s your favourite track on the album?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Gaudi Gang\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s me, <\/span><b>Cappo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Vandal Savage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We had a crew called <\/span><b>Triple V<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and we\u2019ve got some albums together. That track works really well, it\u2019s the energy and the hooks. I like the intro <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u2018Blue Notes\u2019)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like you mentioned in the review, it\u2019s like an anthem for Nottingham. The thing is I\u2019ve got quite an international following, I\u2019ve got a lot of fans in the States and around Europe so it\u2019s good to put the city on the map in that way. It\u2019s been put on the map loads before and there\u2019s a rich history and culture of hip hop in Nottingham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Is there anything else on the album that you would say references Notts?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, there\u2019s loads of stuff! On the song \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stained Glass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 there\u2019s a few bars towards the end of the song where I\u2019m talking about places in Nottingham, because I grew up in New Basford. I talk about St Anns to Radford to Meadows and it\u2019s just about seeing people I haven\u2019t seen for a long time cause it\u2019s a small city. It\u2019s weird because you might dip in and out of town or whatever, but I always end up seeing 20 people and a person I might not have seen for 15 years. It\u2019s just such a small city. So, for people who know Notts there\u2019s certain things in the album where people go \u2018oh shit? That really makes sense to me.\u2019 There&#8217;s quite a lot of Nottingham in there.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/youtu.be\/JPB96rm1tpo&#8221;][vc_column_text]<b>What have you been up to over lockdown?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I continued working but I took a bit of time because everyone\u2019s in the same position. I didn\u2019t feel too creative at the beginning, it was kind of like, is the world gonna end or not? Cause if it\u2019s not then I can get my head into trying to see what the hell\u2019s going on. This position that everyone\u2019s in at the moment, it\u2019s about life, not money for me. It might have hit my pocket, but it doesn&#8217;t matter as long as we can save some people\u2019s lives and keep people safe, that\u2019s what it\u2019s about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just took time to delve into myself a bit more. That\u2019s what I think a lot of people are doing. Looking into yourself and seeing what really matters. I think a lot of people were working 9-5\u2019s that they didn\u2019t like and have realised what the hell am I doing? I don\u2019t actually have to do this. You don\u2019t need loads of money. And you don\u2019t need to have a fucking car you can\u2019t afford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tell us more about your cooking and Chef Jugz.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music is my full time and cheffing, it brings money in, but I love to do it. They are both my passions. I have been doing it for about 5 years. I worked for a few other people and then I saw how the food business works and thought, I can do this for myself. I was doing pop up restaurants in Notts and doing deliveries online. Obviously with this stuff going on right now you can\u2019t really do it and there\u2019s other things I\u2019ve got planned in the future. It\u2019s like the two things go hand in hand, (music and food) they\u2019re both art, they\u2019re both creative. They both make people happy in the same kinda way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Favourite Notts artists right now.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my favourite Notts artists is <\/span><b>LONE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s crazy because he\u2019s a fan of mine as well which is always a beautiful thing, that mutual back and forth. My other favourites are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>CAPPO <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <strong>VANDAL SAVAFE<\/strong><\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who I\u2019ve worked with. I like <\/span><b>SNOWY<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There\u2019s a bunch of people man. There&#8217;s a lot of energy from the city. It\u2019s such a small city with so much talent. Big up everyone doing their thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you have more music coming out soon or anything exciting planned? You\u2019ve already released 2 albums this year which is crazy.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the thing, it\u2019s hard with the era we are in. Artists in the past would do something maybe once a year but because of YouTube and streaming music\u2019s so much more disposable and I\u2019m trying to build it up and keep it going. With <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 Bricks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the vinyl is coming out at the end of the month on a label from Italy called <\/span><b>Tuff Kong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019ve done some stuff before and they are really great people. There\u2019s a music video coming out for \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Been Away\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ft. <\/span><b>Liam Bailey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Bem and that\u2019s going to be amazing. <\/span><b>Michael Holyk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that did it and he\u2019s amazing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve got about six albums finished, so, over the next couple of years I\u2019ve got lots set up.
