{"id":3895,"date":"2012-04-04T17:41:23","date_gmt":"2012-04-04T16:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=3895"},"modified":"2012-04-19T12:42:14","modified_gmt":"2012-04-19T11:42:14","slug":"artist-of-the-month-the-smears-dirty-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/artist-of-the-month-the-smears-dirty-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"ARTIST OF THE MONTH &#8211; THE SMEARS &#8211; Dirty Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Prepare to have any preconceptions you might have about \u201cgirl\u201d groups<\/strong> stabbed in the heart with a sharpened stilletto.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe welcoming lyrics to the opening track <em>\u201cFreak Show\u201d<\/em> on the hotly anticipated second album <em>\u201cDirty Protest\u201d<\/em> from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=610856149&#038;sk=info#!\/pages\/The-SMEARS\/115664515898\">THE SMEARS<\/a><\/strong>, psych you up for a record that is so gloriously punkish it&#8217;ll chew you up and spit you back out&#8230;<em> \u201cLadies and Gentleman I&#8217;d like to welcome you to my freak show.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe unusual combo of an all-girl three piece punk grunge group is perhaps plenty to set them apart from the rest but it doesn&#8217;t stop there &#8211; these girls bleed dirty punk rock blood.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIts like <strong>JOHNNY ROTTEN <\/strong>and <strong>COURTNEY LOVE <\/strong>forced into a blender and then out of the resulting toxic punk smoothie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=610856149&#038;sk=info#!\/pages\/The-SMEARS\/115664515898\">THE SMEARS<\/a><\/strong> are born. Grungey guitars riffs outrageously distorted and anthemic choruses like \u201cI am a freak, I wear it on my sleeve!\u201d are unapologetic, brutal and anarchistic. This lot will grab you by the scruff of the neck and shake your bones. As the sadistic lyrics wrestle with the <strong>RAMONES<\/strong>-esque drumming you can&#8217;t help but feel your ears have been filthily violated. Despite the band being much more attractive than <strong>BETH DITTO<\/strong> <strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=610856149&#038;sk=info#!\/pages\/The-SMEARS\/115664515898\">THE SMEARS <\/a><\/strong>could be the bastard love child of <strong>THE GOSSIP <\/strong>and <strong>RANCID <\/strong>(I promise no more comments on looks, I can sense a kick in the balls on the way).<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/smeary2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/smeary2-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"What you lookin&#039; at PUNK?!\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3966\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/smeary2-294x300.jpg 294w, https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/smeary2-64x64.jpg 64w, https:\/\/www.nusic.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/smeary2.jpg 942w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nEach track on the album is raw and punchy, much like the girls. This isn&#8217;t a band to take your mother to go see, this is a band to go and get smashed to, vomit on your shoes and possibly spend a night in a cell with.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe album is a filthy, seething pit of grungey punk and the second track ominously entitled <em>&#8220;Halloween&#8221;<\/em> epitomises the chaotic anarchism of this gang: <em>\u201cPleased to meet you said the bullet to the gun, lets get together and go and kill someone.\u201d<\/em> Hectic riffs and a crashing drumline accompany the vocals that are spat with venom.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIts no wonder they have managed to secure national radio play and even bagged support slots with punk legends <strong>THE BUZZCOCKS<\/strong> &#8211; these gals mean business.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nI can guarantee that after one listen to <em>&#8220;Dirty Protest<\/em>&#8220;, you&#8217;ll be flipping through the album more than a prostitute flips her mattress. So punk, if you want something to make your day, then head down to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=610856149&#038;sk=info#!\/events\/141159116006301\/\">Dirty Protest Album Launch<\/a><\/strong> on Good Friday at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/The-Navigation\/193510134007279\">The Navigation<\/a>.
